Product Information

We take the art of modern printmaking very seriously. Our prints are not mass-produced. Every print we make is given close, personal attention by our printmaker to ensure that you receive the finest quality print.

All of our prints preserve the appearance of purely hand-made works of art.

The Printing Process

All of our products are created using the most advanced ink jet printing technology available today. Our ink jet prints possess an extremely high level of rich detail and color, and we use pigment inks to ensure a print longevity unsurpassed by other printing technologies. When stored or framed properly, our prints will last more than 275 years before any noticeable fading occurs.

Print Borders

The print sizes listed on the page for each product are the exact size of the printed area. These sizes do not include borders.

For prints up to 23" in the largest dimension we add 1/2" border to all sides. The final paper size of your print will be 1" larger in height and width than the sizes listed on the page for each product.

For prints over 23" in the largest dimension we add 1" border to all sides. The final paper size of your print will be 2" larger in height and width than the sizes listed on the page for each product.

Notecards

All notecards are shipped with acid-free envelopes. On the back of each notecard there is information about the map, including the title, mapmaker, and map year.

Customizations

We would be happy to customize your order in any way you like. If you would like prints made in different sizes or on different media than those you find on our website, please contact us and let us know what you would like. We will do our best to produce it for you.

We print only on high quality, 100% acid-free art papers. The following list describes the papers we use and their properties.

We use only the highest quality pigment inks in all products we sell. When stored or framed properly, our prints will last more than 275 years before any noticeable fading or changes in color balance occur*.

However, several factors may affect the longevity of your print:

Light - Regular exposure to light, especially ultraviolet light (UV) will cause fading over time. It is best to keep your print away from sources of UV light, especially direct sunlight. Other sources of UV light include fluorescent lamps and some halogen lamps.

While dark storage offers the best protection against light, most people choose to frame and display their print. Choose a UV glass or Plexiglas when framing to obtain the best protection. Never hang your print where it will receive any direct sunlight.

Temperature - Avoid storing or displaying your print in high or extremely low temperatures. The optimum temperature range is 68°-77° F (20°-25° C).

Humidity - Avoid storing or displaying your print in high or extremely low humidity. The optimum humidity range is 30-50% relative humidity.

Atmospheric Contaminants - Pollutants such as cigarette smoke, cooking fumes, and other chemicals also can affect print longevity. Prints should be stored to avoid contact with air, or framed behind glass or Plexiglass (especially glass with UV filtering). Never store or display your print in an area where chemicals are stored.

Acidity - Print quality can diminish if prints are stored or displayed in direct contact to materials with high acidity. Acidic materials can cause the paper to discolor and may change the colors in the print. When storing or framing your print, make sure to use only acid-free archival materials.

*According to Wilhelm Imaging Research, an independent organization that conducts research on the stability and preservation of traditional and digital printing processes.

When you receive your print you should immediately frame it, or store it in an archivally safe sleeve or container.

Handling your Print

When handling prints, hold the paper by the edges only - never touch the printed surface. Oils on your hands could transfer to the print, potentially degrading the quality. The print is reasonably resistant to scratches, but it is always best to handle it with care.

Storing your Print

If you plan to store your print, make sure to store it in an archival protective sleeve or an archival box (for storing more than one print). Prints that we ship flat will already come in an archival sleeve. You should keep this sleeve for storage. For prints that we ship in tubes you will need to purchase an archival sleeve or box. Prints should be stored flat, and may be stacked as long as there is an interleaving layer such as glassine, acid-free tissue, or protective sleeves. Store the print in a dark place away from sources of light.

Framing your Print

When framing your print, make sure to use all acid-free materials, and always choose glass or Plexiglass with UV filtering. Never hang your print where it will receive any direct sunlight.
